ILLUSTRATION: All afternoon Friday, Virginia and North Carolina were in the

steamer. Every weather station in Virginia reported a heat index

reading - the combined measure of temperature and humidity, or what

it ``feels like'' - in excess of 100. Some places were higher than

110 most of the afternoon.
