The United States Under-23 soccer team faces what could be an unpleasant end to a seven-day stay in Hampton Roads when it meets the the Trinidad and Tobago National Team tonight at 7 p.m. at Old Dominion.
The U.S. team, which will compose the bulk of the American Olympic team in 1996, is 1-3 on its July tour and has been outscored, 9-0, in its last three games. The latest loss was a 2-0 defeat Tuesday to the Hampton Roads Mariners in Virginia Beach.
Trinidad and Tobago appears to be by far the best team the Americans will face this month.
``Trinidad and Tobago defeated the U.S. national team,'' said U.S. Under-23 forward A.J. Wood in reference to the nation's top amateur team, which includes members of the U.S. World Cup team. ``They're going to be much, much tougher'' than the Mariners.
The Mariners defeated the U.S. with speed, launching long passes downfield and then chasing them down. Trinidad and Tobago will bring a more complicated game, said U.S. coach Timo Liekoski.
``Trinidad and Tobago will use a lot of short passes and put a lot more pressure on us than they (the Mariners) did,'' Liekoski said.
At least one face on the Trinidad and Tobago team will be familiar - Anthony Sherwood, a Virginia Commonwealth University graduate who played last season for the Hampton Roads Hurricanes, forerunners of the Mariners.
Most of the Trinidad and Tobago players have plenty of international experience, including midfielder Marvin Faustin, who has played in 89 international games. ILLUSTRATION: GAMEWATCH
