ATTACKER APPREHENDED ALERT CITIZENS

Sad but true, an Olde Towne resident was attacked in broad daylight Wednesday morning as she neared her home after a morning walk shortly before 8 a.m. Fortunately, she lives in a neighborhood where people keep their ears and eyes open.

Several neighbors, hearing the woman's screams, responded immediately. When the attacker left his victim and started to run, the neighbors ran after him, caught him and held him until police arrived.

The incident is tragic. The action by the neighbors is heart-warming. Too often, citizens do not respond - either because they are afraid or because they think the screams are none of their business.

Most residents of Olde Towne feel some responsibility for their neighborhood, and Wednesday they acted on those feelings. Their action was a good example for all citizens.

If Portsmouth is going to retain control of its streets and improve it image, all law-abiding citizens must get into the act and let the few who would destroy us know the community means business. by CNB
