HEAT DOESN'T STOP ANGLERS IN CHILDREN'S TOURNAMENT

The scorching heat failed to keep about 150 people from hitting local piers and embarking on boats to compete in the fourth annual Kids Fishing Tournament Saturday.

Children fished from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the tournament, which was sponsored by Seamark Foods and Oscar Mayer. A $12 entry fee included a T-shirt as well as entrance to a cookout at Pirate's Cove Yacht Club.

Athletes and volunteers from the Special Olympics also participated in the tournament, fishing from the Crystal Dawn.

At the cookout, the Boys Club Band, a singing group of four brothers from Roanoke Rapids performed a concert.

Other special guests at the cookout include the KFC Chicken Man as well as Piggy Lou and Hay Bailey, Pigman Barbeque mascots.

Winners received trophies and $100 savings bonds.
