The first two Virginia billfish tournaments of the season produced results that can be called mediocre at best.
Some 46 boats competed in Saturday's annual Small Boat Marlin Tournament, hosted by the Virginia Beach Anglers and held out of Rudee Inlet. Only three billfish, all white marlin, were registered.
Fifty-three boats competed in the annual Eastern Shore Marlin Tournament, held out of Wachapreague on Saturday and Sunday. They released three whites Saturday, two Sunday. However, the contest did produce a new leader in the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament: a 72-pound wahoo boated by Steven M. Jones of Virginia Beach on the Spud Chunker.
The waters around Wachapreague also produced a new leader in the Virginia tournament's spadefish division. That weighed 9 pounds, 1 ounce, and was boated by Ron Borlie of Baltimore, fishing on the Grady White.
Elsewhere, Lee Campbell of Virginia Beach boated one of the largest blue catfish ever pulled from the James River, a 39-pounder.
