Goals 2000's main objective lies in churning out fodder for the global workforce and promoting a lack of intelligent thought.
It was with great interest that I read the comments of Virginia Lt. Gov. Don Beyer (Another View, June 28) and Virginia Education Association President Robley Jones (letter, June 29) in support of such an idea. I was appalled by the ease with which they could be bought by the federal government.
Mr. Jones' argument that ``forty-seven other states are participating . . . '' sounded surprisingly adolescent. I would say to him the same thing my mother said to me when I defended foolish behavior: If everybody else were jumping off of a bridge, would you jump?
Historically, Virginia has been known as the home of presidents. If we continue on the course of action supported by these gentlemen, our schools will not be turning out educated voters, much less presidents.
It would be best if neither of these men had career plans that included the support of Virginian's who are not willing to sell out our children at any price. Certainly not for a penny a day.
Hooray for Governor Allen on his firm stand against this insidious idea.
