PORTSMOUTH MAN CHARGED WITH TRYING TO RUN DOWN CHILDREN

A man accused of trying to run down two children with his car, was arrested after a Friday-night high-speed chase and crash, police said Monday.

Jack Lynn Autery, 40, of the 3300 block of Elm Ave. faces several charges including assault and battery, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The children weren't hurt.

About 10 p.m. Friday, police were called to the 3300 block of Elm Ave. A resident told police a man driving a 1988 gray Pontiac Sunbird was trying to run over children in the parking lot of a trailer park.

While police were there, the Sunbird turned onto Elm Avenue and sped toward the officers, veering around them, authorities said.

At least two police cruisers chased the speeding, weaving car onto Frederick Boulevard, authorities said. Police said the driver, later identified as Autery, sped through several red lights.

The car Autery was driving crashed into another car at the Turnpike Boulevard intersection where Autery was caught, police said.

After being treated at Portsmouth General Hospital, Autery was taken to the City Jail and is being held without bail.
