What has happened to the USS Connolly? It was named after my second cousin John G. Connolly, who was killed at Pearl Harbor. The launching was on Jan. 15, 1944, at the Navy Yard in Mare Island, Calif.

The destroyer escort John Gaynor Connolly was decommissioned Nov. 22, 1945, in Charleston, S.C., and sold for scrap May 20, 1946, after receiving two battle stars for World War II service. It should not be confused with the Norfolk-based destroyer Conolly, named for Adm. Richard Conolly, also of World War II fame, but commissioned much later, in 1978.

How old do children have to be to get a military I.D. card?

The standard age for a child to obtain a Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card is 10 years old. A family member under the age of 10 may receive an ID card if they reside with someone other than the military member of the family, or sponsor. Exceptions are also made if the child lives away from the sponsor for an extended time. Check with the sponsor's Personnel Support Detachment for verification and paperwork.

Why are they tearing down the houses at Oceana Wherry and are they planning on building new ones? Or are they just doing away with housing?

Many units are being demolished at Wherry Housing. The Navy conducted a survey about a year ago, and many residents felt they needed more parking. In some cases there are two or more cars per house. Some of the vacant areas will be replaced with parking lots and recreation areas.
