JOHN POLK HARDIN SR.

SHC(Ret) John Polk Hardin Sr., of the 6200 block of Grimes Ave., died of natural causes in his home.

Mr. Hardin was born May 6, 1941, in Smithfield, Pa. He is survived by his wife Helen; daughter, Patricia; sons, John Jr. and Michael; his beloved grandson, Matthew James; and daughter-in-law, Cheri, all of Norfolk. Other survivors include his sisters, Margaret Loulis, Starr Hardin and Elva Kelley, who was his twin, Beverly Miller, Sally Doutt and a host of nieces, nephews and in-laws. Mr. Hardin was predeceased by his parents, Howard ``Boney'' Hardin and Mary ``Dorothy'' Hardin, a brother and three sisters.

Mr. Hardin, a Navy veteran, served in the Vietnam War and retired in Norfolk in 1980 after 20 years of service. He was formerly employed at Fleet Industrial Supply Center Norfolk the Naval Station Norfolk Commissary. He was an active member at the Louise Eggleston Center where he served on the board and was co-leader of Awanas Church Group at Grace Baptist Church. He served as Sergeant-at-arms for the DAV Chapter (NU)4 at the state level. He was active in the veterans' rights movement and was a service officer to help others get their benefits. He received a bachelors degree in Religious Studies from St. Leo's College and was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Other memberships include the Fleet Reserve Assocation Branch (NU)60, American Legion Post (NU)327 and VFW Post (NU)747. John loved children and spent many summers taking care of his grandson Matthew.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. where a Fleet Reserve Service and DAV Service will be held at 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the DAV Chapter (NU)4, the SPCA or Grace Baptist Church. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive is in charge of arrangements.
