PIER FISHING SLOW ON BEACHES AND HATTERAS

Pier fishing along the northern beach area was fair Tuesday.

Tailor blues were taken during the morning on Kitty Hawk Pier, and some speckled trout were landed later in the day.

Some trout and bluefish were taken early in the morning by anglers on Avalon Pier. A few keeper speckled trout were taken on Fin-S lures during the afternoon.

Fishermen on Nags Head Pier caught a few bluefish and croaker, and released several jacks. Anglers on Jennette's Pier decked a few trout and small bottom fish, and released a jack.

Outer Banks Pier reported spot and a few bluefish and the release of five jacks.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported slow fishing due to a big ground swell. Action also was slow on Avon Pier, where a few spot and croaker were landed. Little action was reported from Frisco Pier.

Spot, croaker and a few mullet were beached from Corolla to Oregon Inlet in the surf. A few bottom fish and sheepshead were landed around the inlet.

Surf fishing was fairly slow from Rodanthe to Buxton. Some puppy drum and a few bottom fish were taken Monday night at Cape Point. Blues and small flounder were landed Tuesday.

The surf was rough and dirty along the beach from Cape Point to Hatteras Inlet, resulting in only a few croaker taken.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was excellent for small bluefish, but very few were large enough to keep.

Headboats around the inlet caught plenty of croaker and small gray trout. Trout fishing also was good in the sound behind Off Island and Duck Island.

Bluewater fishing off Oregon Inlet was fair. Some decent catches of dolphin, including a few gaffers, were reported. Tuna were scarce. Fair numbers of billfish were released, including four white marlin by the Tar Heel, a sailfish by the Sea Fever and a white marlin by the Grand Slam.

Dolphin fishing off Hatteras Island was fairly good with some charters landing 30 to 40 bailers. Three white marlin and a sailfish were released by the Hatteras fleet.

Surf fishing for small bottom fish should be good along the beach from Salvo to Buxton once seas subside.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 77.5 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
