MILITARY PEOPLE

Cmdr. Allen Jarrell, a mechanical engineer with the U.S. Public Health Service, was promoted to his present rank on July 1.

Jarrell, stationed at the headquarters of the Food and Drug Administration in Rockville, Md., is the son of Harrietta Jarrell Eley and the grandson of Lillian S. Jones, both of Norfolk. He and his wife, Lt. Cmdr. Donna Matthews Jarrell, a veterinarian with the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., along with their children, live in Glenn Dale, Md.

Navy Ensign Aaron E. Kleinman, a 1991 graduate of Norfolk Collegiate School, recently graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and was commissioned at his present rank. Kleinman's next duty station will be at Naval Flight School in Pensacola, Fla.

Air Force Capt. Leslie Rosen Ann, a Norfolk native and graduate of Lake Taylor High School and the Commonwealth of Virginia University and a flight nurse, was assigned to meet the crew of the space shuttle Atlantis at Cape Canaveral, Fla., to provide medical assistance, if needed, to the astronauts and cosmonauts.

Marine Pfc. Joseph Washington, son of Leonilla M. Apolinar of the 7700 block of Wildwood Drive, recently graduated from the Unit Diary Clerk's Course at Marine Corps Service Support Schools, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. A 1993 graduate of Lake Taylor High School, Washington joined the Marine Corps in December.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Lecia A. Davis-Phillips was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned with Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 126, Naval Air Station, Norfolk.

Marine Pfc. Raymond A. Kirby, a 1994 graduate of Maury High School, recently graduated from Aircraft Firefighting and Rescue School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center at the Naval Air Station Memphis.

CAMPUS NOTES

Joshua Gerloff and Andrew Lynch, rising eighth-grade students at Northside Middle School, placed first and second, respectively, in the Research and Design event at the 17th Technology Student Association Nationals in Chicago. Andrew was also a finalist in the aerospace technology event.

Samantha Salzberg of Norfolk made the dean's list for the spring term at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Three administrative changes in Old Dominion University's Office of Institutional Advancement were approved recently by the university's Board of Visitors. John R. Broderick has been named associate vice president for institutional advancement. His previous title was assistant vice president for institutional advancement and director of university relations. Harry P. Creemers, associate vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of development, will assume additional duties as capital campaign director. And, in connection with Creemers' management of the capital campaign, Philippe M. Chino, director of the President's Council in the Office of Development, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the development office.

Adrienne E. Pruden, a graduate of Norfolk Academy, recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She will continue her education at the University of Virginia Law School.

Stacey Lyn Paul of Norfolk recently graduated from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Mary Ellen Shuttleworth of Norfolk was named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

Colby Hamilton Miller, son of Adm. and Mrs. Paul Miller of Norfolk, recently graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. He was a member of the varsity football and golf teams, as well as the model United Nations Club. He will be attending The Citadel in the fall.

Four students from Norfolk Collegiate School were chosen by the faculty and staff to attend the Boys and Girls State program sponsored by the American Legion of Girls and Boys State of Virginia. They are David M. Craft, Michael A. Reina, Meredith Gauthier and Katherine H. Kiefner.

Jennifer L. Murden and Christie M. Underwood, both of Norfolk, were named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Chowan College in Murfreesboro.

James H. Shumadine and Margaret W. Baker, both of Norfolk, recently graduated from Davidson College in Davidson, N.C.

Walter A. Thomas Jr. of Norfolk recently graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.

Kristen L. Eidam of Norfolk was named to the president's list for the spring semester at Elon College in Elon College, N.C.

Nathaniel F. West and Grace T. Jones, both of Norfolk, recently graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn.

Jessica M. Davey and Travis C. Levy, both of Norfolk, made the dean's list for the spring semester at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
