U.N. SAYS COAL EXPORTS TO SURGE IN U.S. BY 2010

Exports of U.S. coal will climb to 130 million tons by 2010, from 71 million tons in 1994, a U.N. agency predicted. A report by the U.N. Economic Commission for Europe predicted global coal exports would grow to 578 million by 2010 from 430 million tons in 1994, spurred by strong demand from Asia. Hampton Roads is the largest U.S. coal exporting port. Last year, 35 million tons of coal were shipped from the region's terminals. Australia, the world's No. 1 exporter ahead of the United States, is expected to post strong gains, with volume increasing to 169 million tons by 2010, up sharply compared to 131 million tons in 1993. by CNB
