LIBRARY OFFERING VARIED PROGRAMS OF SUMMER DIVERSION

School may be out, but children looking for a diversion from the heat, or parents looking to divert them, may want to consider library exploration.

To encourage young readers or readers-to-be, the Chesapeake Public Library System has organized several events:

Summer reading program: Children must sign up for the program and track their reading progress. Children receive an incentive from the library treasure chest for every book they read. Incentives range from stickers to erasers, pencils or small toys. The summer reading program runs through Aug. 12. Call your local library to sign up.

Story time: Want a break from story reading? Story time is offered by all the city libraries. Call your local branch for dates and times.

Coats of arms: Make your own coat of arms at Russell Memorial Library, Thursday, July 27, 3 p.m. Children ages 6 and up can learn about family history while they construct their coat of arms. Registration is required. Call 465-3123.

Friendly Dragons: Children ages 3 to 5. Children can make their own puppet while listening to stories of dragons at Greenbrier Library. Thursday, Aug. 10, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Registration required. Call 436-4656.

Summer finale: Richmond ventriloquist, Tyrone Travis, and his talking book and dragon will come to city libraries Aug. 14 and 15 to mark the end of the summer library programs. On Aug. 14, Travis will be at Chesapeake Central library at 10 a.m., Greenbrier Library at 1:30 p.m., and Indian River at 3:30 p.m. On Aug. 15, Travis will entertain children at Russell Memorial at 10 a.m., Major Hillard at 1:30 p.m. and South Norfolk at 3:30 p.m. by CNB
