On July 5, columnist Lawrence Maddry wrote a descriptive article about an area of Virginia Beach that has been historically called Chesapeake Beach. But instead of calling it Chesapeake Beach, he used a slang nickname, ``Chick's Beach,'' which has emerged in use these past few years.
Chick's Beach did exist and was the location of a very modest concession stand selling soft drinks, hot dogs, etc., in the summer months.
Luther Leddington, whose nickname was ``Chick,'' and his wife, Audrey, ran the concession. Decent, kind individuals, they hired local youngsters who often referred to the place where they worked as ``Chick's Beach.''
Chesapeake Beach is not Chick's Beach. Chick's Beach is not Chesapeake Beach.
First settlers who discovered this pristine shore of the Chesapeake named it Chesapeake Beach. They came with family and friends, built cottages, homes, had children, formed fire and rescue squads, civic leagues, a woman's club - they all called Chesapeake Beach their area to be served.
Let us all work to keep the rightful name, Chesapeake Beach, alive and well.
