PIERS SLOW YET AGAIN; WHEN WILL THIS END?

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow Thursday.

On Kitty Hawk Pier, a few small bottom fish were taken. Anglers on Avalon Pier caught a few blues and Spanish early in the morning but little afterward.

A few Spanish mackerel, blues, flounder and triggerfish were landed from Nags Head Pier. Jennette's Pier reported a 42-pound cobia taken on live bait during the afternoon.

Additionally, a few spot and croaker were landed. On Outer Banks Pier, a 22-pound jack was released. Otherwise, action was at a standstill.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported some Spanish mackerel, blues and a 41-pound king mackerel taken during the morning. On Avon Pier, spots, croaker, two king mackerel, a tarpon and a cobia were landed. Frisco Pier anglers caught spot, croakers, blues and Spanish.

A few small blues and bottom fish were taken along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet. Some mullet, croaker and pompano were landed in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton.

At Cape Point, a few Spanish mackerel were beached on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday some blues, Spanish mackerel and mullet were landed during the day.

Surf casters caught flounder, blues and small bottom fish along the beach from Cape Point to Hatteras Inlet.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet improved with lots of Spanish taken. Some cobia were landed outside the inlet. Headboats in the area caught croakers and a few Spanish mackerel.

Dolphin fishing was good southeast of Oregon Inlet. In addition, a few tuna and dolphin were taken. About 25 billfish were released.

Off Hatteras, charter boats landed plenty of dolphin, including some goffers. The Hatteras fleet released 17 billfish.

Over the weekend, light winds and clear water along the beach should improve cobia and king mackerel fishing.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 79 degrees Thursday. by CNB
