WAS MCDOWELL POINTING WHERE HIS NEXT HR WOULD GO?

Sign language: As it turns out, pitcher Jack McDowell wasn't giving the Yankee Stadium crowd the ``Bronx salute.'' He was just pointing to where his next gopher ball would land.

Maybe so: When that round mound of sound, Arizona Cardinals coach Buddy Ryan, says, ``Dallas is the team to beat in our division, but we are the only club in the division that can do it,'' he is at least half right.

Not so hot: Nationally, last week's Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic was eclipsed by a PGA Seniors event and the U.S. Women's Open.

Court report: O.J. Simpson should stop wasting everybody's time and get on with serving his prison term. I'd say he deserves three to five years just for appearing in that workout video.

Following the crowd: I don't know what I think of the NCAA reducing Maryland quarterback Scott Milanovich's penalty from eight to four games for betting with a bookie. What I do know is that gambling is so ingrained in our culture today, it is possible for a young athlete to wager on games without him feeling he's doing anything wrong.

Not politically correct: She's a great spokesperson for women's sports, and a credit to her game but, boy, did Chris Evert play boring tennis when Martina Navratilova wasn't on the court to press her.

Money matters: The $781,780 Greg Norman won in June is not only a PGA record for one month, it is almost $100,000 more than Laura Davies collected in 1994 when she topped the LPGA earnings list.

Movie magic: By giving up on a basketball comeback to operate a cinema complex, Magic Johnson is trading one showtime for another.

Coming around: When Mike Tyson says, ``I feel kids can find somebody better to look up to than me,'' you start to think there may be hope for him yet.

Playing games: In the spirit of the 1996 Olympics, it has been reported that the EconoLodge Airport Hotel in Atlanta is asking $212 per night for rooms that usually go for $49. Let the gouging begin.

Breathless anticipation: A year to go until rhythmic gymnastics.

Won't go away: I'm convinced that Carl Lewis' determination to win more Olympic gold medals stems from a desire to annoy us.

Idle thought: It's incredible that bicycle riders who reach speeds of 50 mph would be permitted to compete in the Tour de France without helmets.

Hot stuff: None of the great baseball minds Peter Gammons might assemble could explain why the Cleveland Indians have won 14 games in their last at-bat. It's just their year.

Sarcasm ahead: Last time anybody checked, former Norfolk State football coach Archie ``Gunslinger'' Cooley was at Texas Southern, where he is offensive coordinator and ethics advisor.

Moving on up: Ki-Jana Carter, the Cincinnati Bengals' latest millionaire, insists that money won't change him. Maybe not. But it will change the way everyone sees him. by CNB
