CHARTER BOATS REPORT FAIR CATCHES IN THE GULF STREAM

Fair catches of dolphin, a few tuna and scattered wahoo were reported by charter boats fishing in the Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet Friday.

Billfishing was good, with more than 30 released by the Oregon Inlet fleet. The fish were scattered from the Diamond Shoals tower to well northeast of the inlet.

Dolphin fishing was good off Hatteras Island, but tuna were scarce. About 10 billfish were released by the Hatteras fleet.

Inshore trolling was good around Oregon Inlet on Friday morning, with plenty of Spanish mackerel and some bluefish taken.

A few 30-pound cobia were taken on tide lines off the inlet. Headboat catches of croaker were excellent on morning trips. The afternoon trips produced lots of sea bass and triggerfish.

Warm, clear water kept action to a minimum Friday on ocean piers along the Dare Coast.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported two small cobia landed, while some small flounder and a pompano were taken on Avalon Pier.

A few bar jacks were caught by anglers on the Nags Head Pier, and a handful of spot were landed during the morning on Jennette's Pier.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught a few blues, Spanish mackerel and spot early in the day.

South of Oregon Inlet, a few spot and croaker were taken on Rodanthe Pier. Some bluefish and small bottom fish were landed during the morning on Avon Pier, and a 32-inch cobia was released. Frisco Pier reported small bottom fish.

A few flounder and small bluefish were taken in the surf along the northern beaches. Scattered spot, croaker, mullet and pompano were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton.

At Cape Point, Spanish mackerel fishing was good just before dark Thursday, but fishing was slow Friday.

Fishing for bluefish was good Friday morning at False Point, with most taken on cut bait. A few sea mullet, spot and croaker also were beached.

Some good catches of speckled trout were reported from the Melvin Daniels Bridge on the Manteo Causeway during the morning. Some nice flounder were taken during the afternoon.

Surf fishing for small bottom fish should improve if southwest winds dirty the inshore water.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 76 degrees Friday. by CNB
