Gov. George Allen has done the people of Virginia a great favor by not applying for Goals 2000 federal funds. He has protected our children from intrusion into their private lives without parental consent and given parents authority, which is what we want.
It never ceases to amaze me how people like Guy Friddell can criticize the governor and write with such lack of knowledge of what this program really is about. At one of the hearings, Michelle Easton, drawing from her experience in the U.S. Department of Education, made the point that promises to Virginia need not be kept by succeeding bureaucrats.
Governor Allen has shown great wisdom, and I commend him for it.
Those who want to be informed should attend the Aug. 8 hearing on guidance counseling at Lake Taylor High School, 1384 Kempsville Road at 7 p.m. Elementary guidance counseling, we don't want. It wastes time needed for academic studies and often drifts into violating pupils' and families' privacy, and dangerous role-playing games - essentially practicing psychology without a license.
