When legalized gambling was instituted several years ago in Virginia, it was my understanding that it would greatly benefit our educational system.
I have yet to see any substantial benefits to education deriving from the state lottery. Our systems in Hampton Roads are no better off financially than they were several years ago before the lottery.
Teachers are still struggling for adequate salaries, vital programs are still being cut or deleted, and many of the older schools don't have air conditioning or up-to-date materials or technology. The questions to be answered are: Where is the money being spent? Who decides how the money is spent? When will our educational institutions benefit from the Virginia State Lottery? I think that any monies derived from the lottery should be placed into education first.
