Deborah Jewell-Jackson, special assistant to the superintendent of schools for the past two years, will leave to become an associate superintendent for Richmond city schools.

Jewell-Jackson, who recently completed her doctorate at Harvard University, worked on developing strong communications with parents, staff and students in the Beach and hosted the superintendent's television news show ``In the Right Direction.''

In Richmond, her responsibilities will include community outreach and support, school/business partnerships and parental involvement.

SCHOOL BOARD

In their July 18 meeting, School Board members took the following actions:

Same chair: Unanimously re-elected June Kernutt as chairwoman. Vice Chairman Linn Felt was re-elected on a 9-2 vote. Board members Elsie Barnes and Ulysses Van Spiva voted for Tim Jackson as vice chairman; Jackson voted for Felt.

Time change: Voted to start their second monthly meeting at an earlier time. The meeting on the third Tuesday of each month will begin at 2 p.m. instead of 3:30 p.m. Members wanted to finish their often lengthy meetings a bit earlier.

New report cards: Approved three standard report cards to be used by all of the district's 52 elementary schools. A district committee created one version of the card for kindergarten students, one for first- and second-graders and another for third through fifth grades.

Superintendent search: Approved 12 organizations to provide representatives for a superintendent search advisory committee, although the role of the committee has not been determined.

The organizations are: the Association of Elementary School Principals, the Association of Secondary School Principals, City Council, Council of Civic Organizations, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Virginia Beach School Board, Student Council Association, Virginia Beach Council of PTAs, Virginia Beach Education Association, Virginia Beach City Schools (teacher representative) and Visions.

The school board will provide two representative to the committee; all other organizations will provide one.

The board members decided to wait until after a search firm has been chosen to decide how to involve the committee in selecting a new superintendent. They did, however, hear four proposals for the committee's role, prepared by members Donald Bennis and Joseph Taylor. Those suggestions range from having the committee develop a qualification profile to having committee members meet with the board in executive session to choose finalists. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
