The state Department of Motor Vehicles broke ground Friday for a new customer service center to be built in the Hilltop area within the next year.
The 10,400-square-foot service center at 1710 Donna Blvd., near the corner of First Colonial Road. will feature 16 teller windows, a drive-through window, two photo stations and 130 customer parking spaces.
The office also will sport six Automated Testing System machines, which electronically test and tally results for the driver's license exam.
Construction on the facility is scheduled to be completed around the first of the year.
``A marketing survey has shown that the new site is more accessible to different forms of transportation,'' said DMV spokesperson Jeanne Chenault, explaining how the site was selected. ``We're not only thinking of the current population, but we're thinking ahead to the projected population.''
Currently, there are two DMV offices in Virginia Beach - Mustang Trail, which opened in 1971 in the Lynnhaven area, and Buckner Boulevard, which opened in 1988 in Princess Anne.
A satellite branch of DMV inside Lynnhaven Mall was closed earlier this year because there wasn't enough customer demand to keep the small office open, said Chenault. The mall office only handled simple transactions, like renewals, whereas the bigger branches offer full service, including driver testing.
All local branches of DMV are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
