Undefeated Indian River clinched at least a tie for the Chesapeake Summer Passing League championship with a 38-0 rout of Great Bridge last week.
James Boyd and Antwan Stukes led the way with a pair of touchdown passes. Boyd, the starting quarterback on the Braves' Division 6 Eastern Region championship team last fall, tossed a 20-yard strike to Anthony Cason to open the scoring in the first quarter. In the second period, Boyd connected on a 37-yard scoring pass to Lance Bishop. Boyd then turned his attention to playing wide receiver, where he was on the receiving end of a 47-yard bomb from Stukes, as well as a pair of two-point conversions.
A 17-yard Stukes pass to Mike Joyner and a 40-yard interception return by Chris Edmonds on the last play of the game accounted for the rest of the Indian River touchdowns.
The Braves (3-0) can win the league title outright Wednesday when they close out the schedule with a 6 o'clock game against Deep Creek (1-2) at Deep Creek.
Great Bridge (0-3) will take on Oscar Smith (1-2) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Deep Creek in the season finale for both teams.
Western Branch 20, Deep Creek 0: Daryl Walton threw three touchdown passes and the Bruin defense recorded its third shutout as Western Branch finished at at 3-1.
Walton's performance included a 20-yard scoring pass to Shyrone Stith, a 5-yard TD toss to Lorenzo Ferguson and an 11-yard touchdown throw to brother Darren Walton.
The scoring reception and the season were both confidence builders for Darren Walton.
``This league really helped me with my receiving skills,'' he said. ``This year the defenders are going to fear me.'' ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by STEVE EARLEY
