SPORTS CLUB BEGINS GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY YEAR BILL KLINE, A FORMER MAN OF THE YEAR, IS THE NEW PRESIDENT.

THE PORTSMOUTH SPORTS Club has selected its leaders for 1995-96 as it prepares for its Golden Anniversary.

Bill Kline succeeds Donald Hundley as president.

Other new officers are Jackie Taylor, first vice president; Bobby McKinney, second vice president; Carol Taaffe, secretary; and Roger Reinhold, treasurer.

Hundley becomes chairman of the board of directors, which include Kenny Babb, Charles Lee, Walt Jernigan, Bill Jessee, Bill Knowles, Joe Lofurno, Gene Luke, Doug Powell, Gracie Lee VanDyck, Paul Vestal, Jimmy Williams, Ken Wren Jr. and Jerry Wright Jr.

Kline, whose son is a junior varsity coach at Wilson High School, has long been active in development of sports in the city.

Owner of Kline Realty, the 58-year-old Kline was chosen by the Downtown Athletic Club as its Man of the Year in Sports for 1987.

He was the first president of the Summer Collegiate Baseball Association, Hampton Roads District, and was instrumental in bringing the National Senior League World Series to this area in 1986. For many years he served on the city's Parks and Recreation Commission.

A native of Philadelphia and a graduate of St. Joseph's University, Kline has made his home in Portsmouth since serving in the Navy here. In addition to serving as an officer in numerous leagues, he also has coached youth teams.

Both his son and daughter were athletes at Churchland High School.

The Sports Club was organized in 1946. In 1990 it merged with the Downtown Athletic Club to form a single membership exceeding 200.

In addition to holding an annual Jamboree, the Sports Club meets monthly at the Holiday Inn-Portside and helps sponsor such events as the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and the Portsmouth Crew Classic. It recognizes and honors outstanding area athletes and coaches, the city's Sportsman of the Year and awards scholarships to deserving high school seniors through the Portsmouth Sports Club Scholarship Fund.

``This scholarship fund is continuing to build,'' said Powell, its first chairman when the fund started in 1973. ``We have about $60,000 in it at this time.''

The scholarships are awarded to athletes who attend a Virginia college or university. Recipients must have a financial need and graduate with at least a C or equivalent scholastic average. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photo by JIM WALKER
