A 7-year-old Arkansas boy drowned Saturday evening while swimming in a private pool during a picnic at the Indian Lakes Apartments in the 1500 block of Hiawatha Drive near Lake Christopher.
There was no lifeguard on duty at the in-ground pool, police said.
The pool was not legally required to have one.
The boy, identified as Cedric R. Miller, was with his family from Pine Bluff, Ark. They had arrived in Hampton Roads at about 1 p.m. Saturday to visit with relatives who live in the Indian Lakes Apartments.
Witnesses told police the youth had been jumping in and out of the water.
But at about 6:35 p.m., he was spotted floating face-down in a 5-foot-deep section of the pool.
The boy was pulled from the water.
Rescuers called for help and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The boy was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
