ARGUMENT LEAVES ONE DEAD AT OUTER BANKS

A 22-year-old waiter who had just moved to the area was shot to death by his roommate during an argument early Saturday, police said, after a third man was wounded trying to break up the fight.

The shootings happened at about 4:30 a.m. at 1513 Glider Court.

Matthew Addleman was shot several times, police said, and was dead at the scene. Marine Lance Cpl. Carlos Bonafonte, 22, of Gaithersburg, Md., was shot twice in the elbow and was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital. He was later transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth. He underwent surgery for his wounds, which were not considered to be life threatening.

Josh Hilliard Cathey, 22, a Kill Devil Hills construction worker, and a native of Gloucester, Va., was charged with second-degree murder, and is being held in the Dare County Detention Center. Police are still trying to determine the reason for the argument.

Kill Devil Hills Police Chief Jim Gradeless said Addleman and some friends were awake in the pre-dawn hours when Cathey returned to the house he shared with Addleman. They argued, police said, and Cathey allegedly fired several shots from a 9 mm pistol. Addleman was shot several times. Bonafonte apparently tried to break up the argument, and was shot twice.

Cathey had lacerations on his head that police say probably occurred during the argument. He was treated at a medical center before being jailed.

``There was a total of about eight people in the house,'' Gradeless said. ``When the incident started, the remaining five individuals got out of there through doors, windows, anywhere they could find. They just wanted to get out of there.''

Cathey remained at the scene until police arrived. He surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without incident, Gradeless said.

``After the incident, he walked outside, put the gun on the hood of a car, and waited for officers to arrive,'' Gradeless said.

Police spent much of Saturday questioning witnesses who were at the house at the time of the shooting. The residence is at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac in what Gradeless described as a ``typical suburban neighborhood.''

Three of the witnesses declined comment after talking to police. Names of the other two witnesses were not available.

Addleman had moved here from Sea Isle, N.J., at the beginning of the summer.

He worked at Carolina Seafood, a popular Kill Devil Hills restaurant.

Owner Carol Ann Angelos recalls that Addleman was a ``good kid. I only saw him a couple of hours a night, but he did a good job. He was like a lot of the kids that come down here. He was a surfer.''

Bonafonte is stationed at Camp Geiger near Jacksonville, N.C. He is a Marine reservist on active duty.

Cathey is expected to be formally charged Monday morning in Dare County Superior Court.

The incident was the second homicide in this quiet resort community in the last five months. In February, a Delaware man shot his three children, then committed suicide.
