John Henry Hollowell, 70, of Route 1, died Sunday morning, July 23, 1995, in his home.
Mr. Hollowell was born in Chowan County. The son of the late Algie and Mrs. Annie Copeland Hollowell, he was a retired farmer and had retired as a machinist from United Piece Dye Works. While working at the Dye Plant, he served as its Union's treasurer. He was a member of Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church and its Adult Men's Sunday School class. He had served in the Civil Conservation Corps and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Viola Chappell Hollowell; one daughter, Gloria Ann Hollowell of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; one son, John Lee Hollowell and his wife, LaWanda of Tyner; four sisters, Grace Saks of Virginia Beach, Bessie Lee Rountree of Edenton, Charlotte Breeding and Talmadge Hassell, both of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, John R. Hollowell, Ryan T. Hollowell, Daniel L. Hollowell, Wendy Hollowell and Travis Hollowell. He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Lee Hollowell and two sisters, Pauline Lamb and Pearl Ann Harrell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy Green, the Rev. Lamar Sentell and the Rev. Mike Jordan. Burial with military rites will be in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
