PORTSMOUTH SHOOTING LEAVES 1 MAN DEAD, ANOTHER WOUNDED

Two men were shot, one of them fatally, late Monday afternoon within blocks of a police tactical response unit that was sweeping through the River Edge Apartments on a routine patrol.

The police unit responded immediately to 5 Cambridge St., finding the two victims on the sidewalk, each with gunshot wounds. One of the men provided a description of a suspect. Moments later police detained three men for questioning.

One of the suspects was carrying a revolver that police believe may have been involved in the shooting, which occurred at 5:35 p.m. No arrests were announced Monday night. The identities of the victims were being withheld until relatives could be notified, said police spokesman G.A. Brown.

One of the victims died at Maryview Regional Medical Center. The other was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. His condition was not available.

The police tactical units have been patrolling the apartment complex because of reports of frequent gunshots and drug activity, Brown said.
