About 40 volunteers rounded up wild ponies from the Assateague Island wildlife refuge on Monday for the 70th annual Pony Penning. On Wednesday the saltwater cowboys will drive the herd across the 250-yard channel to the town of Chincoteague, where the ponies will be auctioned Thursday. Only 150 ponies are permitted at the federal wildlife refuge, so the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department uses the auction to thin the herd and raise money for the department.
