Production problems on a new multimedia projector and price-cutting by competitors resulted in a $711,000 loss for nView Corp. during its second quarter, the Newport News-based designer and maker of projection products reported Monday.
The second-quarter loss put nView $1.3 million in the red for the first half of fiscal year 1995, compared with a net income of $1.2 million for the same period last year.
The company's inability to get liquid crystal display components for its new multimedia projector was primarily responsible for the production problems, spokesman James Kirkpatrick said.
nView rang up $9.6 million in sales during the second quarter of 1995, or $200,000 less than the same period last year. Sales for the first half of this year totaled $18 million, $400,000 less than the same six months last year, nView reported.
Excessive inventory weighed down the company's results. Although nView reduced its inventory by $2 million during the quarter, it still reported $18.9 million worth of inventory at the end of June.
nView's operating expenses jumped 32 percent, or $896,000, compared to the second quarter of 1994. The company attributed the increase to higher promotional expenses for the new projector and additional costs for research and development. by CNB
