Bell Atlantic sent 388,000 post cards informing customers their area code will change to the new 540 code. Problem is, the postcards went to those in the Northern Virginia suburbs who will remain part of 703. The cards explaining the new 540 area code starting this month were supposed to have gone to 540 customers - from the western part of the state stretching over to Fredericksburg and King George County. The company suspects a programming error. The cards did not go to customers in the new area code who are served by other local phone companies. (AP) by CNB
