What seems to be the underlying principle of whether Richmond needs another statue follows briefly.
There are three levels of hero in U.S. society: political, military and anyone else. We erect buildings to the first, put up statues to the second and have trouble even agreeing on the definition of the third, much less the shape of the monument.
The fact that Arthur Ashe has found a permanent place in Richmond may cause a fundamental revolution in U.S. social deification theory. An upheaval may be in the works, folks.
