'94 WINNER RASMUSSEN TIED FOR PAYTON GOLF LEAD

The leaderboard at the Payton Memorial has a bit of local flavor and some out-of-town spice heading into today's final round.

Defending champion Rob Rasmussen of Virginia Beach shot a 2-under-par 67 Tuesday to share the lead with Patrick Kinley of Anderson, S.C.

Another shot back at 68 are Oakton's G.W. Cable, Richmond's John Rollins and Stephen Swartz of Camp Hill, Pa.

Rasmussen and Kinley will tee off at 1 p.m. in the final group with Rollins and Swartz.

Rasmussen, a rising sophomore at Virginia Tech, put his pitching wedge to good use at the eighth, 13th and 16th holes, hitting a trio of approaches within 8 feet to set up birdies. His lone bogey was at the par-5 sixth, where he left a wedge approach short of the green.

Rasmussen, who broke into the Hokies' starting lineup this spring, said his plan will be the same today as it was in Tuesday: Stay out of trouble. ``If you make pars and stay away from the big numbers here you can do well,'' he said.

Kinley had five birdies and three bogeys. After a strong junior college campaign at Anderson College, he signed with Division II national champion Florida Southern. Kinley has been in South Hampton Roads for three weeks, staying at the home of Anderson teammate Conlin Giles after playing the Eastern Amateur.

``You have to think your way off every tee,'' Kinley said of the tight, tree-lined, 6,029-yard course. ``I only hit my driver four times today.''

Two 15-year-olds, Kevin Miller of Virginia Beach and Cameron Yancey of Blackstone, both shot 69 to share the lead in the Cadet (15-17) Division.

Girls Division defending champion Karla Roberson, a rising sophomore at Longwood, shot 1-under 68 for a seven-shot lead over fellow Chesapeake resident Heather Jeffries. by CNB
