FAMILY ESCAPES FIRE WITHOUT INJURIES AT KITTY HAWK HOME

A family occupying a Lillian Street home escaped with their lives Wednesday night when a fire swept the house.

The two-story structure was in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene. Kitty Hawk Fire Chief Lowell Spivey said the family had evacuated and was waiting outside when firefighters arrived.

The identity of the family is unknown, Spivey said. It is also unclear if the family was renting or owned the home in this north beach community.

``There's not really much I can tell you at this point,'' Spivey said. ``I spoke with the father, and he said that they had gotten everybody out.''

Firefighters from Southern Shores, Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Colington and Duck battled the blaze for more than two hours after being dispatched about 6:45 p.m. The fire left only a charred shell on one side of the house and destroyed a van parked in the driveway.

Units from the Dare County Emergency Medical Service and the Kitty Hawk Police Department were also at the scene. No one was hurt.

Fire personnel had to contend with oppressive heat and humidity. Some rested on a nearby lawn after the fire was brought under control.

Meanwhile, Spivey said the investigation into the blaze is continuing.

``We believe the fire started in the downstairs part of the house,'' Spivey said. ``But it's too early to tell.'' by CNB
