CHURCHLAND REACHES MAJOR SECTIONAL FINAL PLAYOFFS

District 6 champion Churchland has moved into the finals of the Major Little League baseball Sectional tournament at Fleet Park in Norfolk.

The Churchland team downed Warwick, 7-2, Monday night to capture the losers bracket championship. Churchland sent ace Bret Wayman against unbeaten Plaza National Tuesday night. A win for Churchland would bring a second game on Wednesday with Plaza for the title and a spot in the state tournament at Pound, Va.

Wayman has spun three shutouts for Churchland, two in the district and one in the Sectional. Steven Henderson hurled Churchland's Monday victory over Warwick.

Huguenot, the champion of the Richmond area, won the Little League state baseball tournament at Olive Branch and advances to Divisional play at Turnersville, N.C.

The winner of the Divisional crown will move to the Southern Region in Florida, where a berth in the Little League World Series will be up for grabs.

In the title game at Olive Branch, Huguenot edged Manassas, 4-3.

Huguenot swept through the winners bracket without a loss.

Manassas downed Big Stone Gap, 7-3, in the title game of the losers bracket.

In the Junior Division, District 6 champ Charles Peete won the Sectional title at Bowling Green and qualified for the State Tournament in Covington.

After losing its opening game in the Section 4 meet to District 8 champion Wards Corner, 9-6, Charles Peete won four in a row.

In a 9-6 opening loss, Willie Cuffee struck out 12 for Charles Peete.

Charles Peete then topped Richmond County, the District 15 winner, 14-4. Sheldon Porter hurled the win and DeLonte Riddick scored three runs for the District 6 champs.

DuJuan Lee, striking out seven, pitched Charles Peete to a 6-5 victory over Wards Corner. Grant Mills scored the winning run. George Boykins contributed four hits.

Brandon Hall did not allow a hit in Charles Peete's 12-5 win over District 7 champion York County. The big blow in the victory was a grand-slam by Cuffee, who had three hits.

In the final, Charles Peete posted its second win over York County, 10-9. Cuffee was the winner. Boykins had three hits, including a home run. Cuffee also smacked a homer.

In the State tournament at Covington, Charles Peete lost to Tuckahoe, 15-5, rebounded for a 14-11 victory over Coeburn and then was eliminated by Annandale, 23-21, in a five-hour, nine-inning battle.

Tuckahoe then beat Annandale, 9-3, to win the State championship.

In Charles Peete's victory over Coeburn, Raymond Gardner was the winner. Boykins continued his heavy hitting with three base knocks. Cuffee hit a game-winning home run.

Managed by Peter Roberts and coached by Anthony Cooke, the Charles Peete team also included Randy Lightfoot, Kevin Llanos, Mario Theus and John Turner.

The District 6 team won the State tournament at Harrisonburg and moves into Divisional play at a site still to be determined in West Virginia. District 6 probably will see action on Saturday.

Team members are Deon Boone, Ernest Weston, Dedrick Johnson, William Herndon, Dre Bly, Terrell Daniels, Calvin Diggs, Nathaniel Anthony, Tavis Graves, Jason Morgan, Danny Self, Mack Hemmis, Damion Crocker and Scott Turner.

In the State tournament, District 6 beat Shenandoah Valley, the District 3 winner, 4-3, in its opener. Hemmis pitched the win. Herndon had three hits.

In game No. 2, District 6 edged Abington of District 1, 6-5. Self, Weston and Daniels split mound chores with Daniels hurling two-shutout innings for the victory. Weston and Diggs poled home runs for District 6.

Herndon pitched the championship win over District 5 of Richmond, 10-7. District 6 racked up nine runs in the first inning. Weston and Boone had two-run home runs in that frame. Herndon, Bly and Daniels each had three hits.

In other action:

In softball, the Big League District 6 entry lost in the Sectional at Tappahannock. In the Senior League Sectional, District 6 champion Olive Branch bowed to Culpeper at Matthews County.

In the Mustang baseball North Sectional, Western Branch National bowed to Kempsville, 13-7, after downing Bi-County, N.C., 14-3.

In the Colt tourney North Sectional Western Branch lost to Great Bridge, 6-4, and to Chesterfield, 5-4.

Kempsville Blue defeated Churchland-Western Branch, 11-7, in the Palomino North Section tournament.

In the Pony Sectional Western Branch was eliminated on a 10-8 loss to Peanut Pony. MEMO: Editor's note: This report includes games through Monday night. by CNB
