A preliminary hearing is scheduled Aug. 15 for a 22-year-old Virginia man charged in a fatal weekend shooting in this north beach community.
Josh Hilliard Cathey has been charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of his roommate, 22-year-old Matthew Addleman, last Saturday morning.
Cathey also is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in the shooting of 22-year-old Carlos Bonafonte.
The charges apparently stemmed from Addleman's efforts to evict Cathey from the house they shared at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac at 1513 Glider Court in Kill Devil Hills.
The purpose of the August hearing is to determine if there is probable cause to submit the case to the grand jury for possible indictment.
Kill Devil Hills Police Lt. Bill Walker said autopsy reports revealed that Addleman had been shot four times with a 9-millimeter pistol.
Bonafonte, a Marine lance corporal, was shot in the elbow and in the buttocks.
Cathey, a Gloucester, Va., native, is being held in the Dare County Detention Center on $70,000 bond.
