Gary McDonald of Concord, N.C., was named principal of Kitty Hawk Elementary School, and Bruce Shepard, formerly the guidance counselor at Kitty Hawk Elementary, was named principal of Cape Hatteras School.
McDonald began his career with the Concord Public Schools in 1976 as an elementary teacher. He served as assistant principal at two elementary schools and as interim principal at another. His most recent position was assistant principal of Mount Pleasant Middle School.
McDonald earned a bachelor's degree in history, a master's in education administration and an advanced degree in educational administration at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Shepard has taught school in Weeksville, Windsor and Honolulu, served as a U.S. Merchant Mariner, lectured in Australia and was a school counselor in New South Wales. Shepard has worked at Kitty Hawk Elementary since 1987.
Shepard earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education and a master's in education from East Carolina University. He earned his doctorate degree in philosophy from Oregon University.
The School Board's action was the result of an extensive selection process. At each school, parents and staff were named to a principal selection committee to identify the three best candidates. Dare County Superintendent Leon Holleman interviewed the final candidates and recommended McDonald and Shepard to the School Board. by CNB
