Gov. George F. Allen hobbled to work Friday after suffering a knee injury during a pickup football game outside his mansion.
Allen was host at a cookout Thursday evening for the Governor's Fellows, an annual program for college graduates and graduate students. He said his team was ahead when the mishap occurred.
``I should have stayed on offense,'' said Allen, a former University of Virginia quarterback. ``I was playing on the defensive line and ended up twisting my knee.''
Allen, 43, sported a large brace on his right knee and a hand-carved cane he said he received as a gift.
``There's some level of damage to the ligaments,'' said Allen, who underwent surgery on the same knee after a football injury in 1979. ``And we'll find out what the damage is to the cartilage this weekend.''
Allen said his injury won't prevent him from attending the National Governors Association meeting this weekend in Burlington, Vt.
``He's like the Energizer Bunny; he keeps going and going. He's the Democrats' worst nightmare,'' chief of staff Jay Timmons said. ILLUSTRATION: ASSOCIATED PRESS
