The city's prosecutor, sheriff and police chief said Friday their offices would review all applications to the Circuit Court for concealed gun permits before such permits are issued.
A new state law that took effect July 1 restricts the reasons that judges have to deny a permit for a concealed weapon. But the law also allows law enforcement officials to object to the issuing of a permit if there is evidence that the weapon is likely to be used illegally or negligently.
Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Humphreys, Chief of Police Charles Wall and Sheriff Frank Drew said in a joint statement that their review of permit applications ``will go a long way toward insuring that only law-abiding and legally responsible citizens receive a permit to carry a concealed weapon.''
