The coming two weekends in Portsmouth are full of nostalgia that once again reminds us of the wonderful heritage of this city.
A Tidewater Winds concert Friday night will emphasize show tunes but also include a homage to John Philip Sousa and his marches so associated with the military history here. Then on Saturday, the Naval Shipyard has invited the public to Trophy Park for a concert by the Tidewater Community Band, bringing back a tradition of citizen involvement with the navy yard.
On the same weekend, the ninth annual Gospelrama, also free to the public, will bring Portside alive with the joyous sounds of gospel music. Sponsored by HOPS, the concert aims at integration of the audience as well as a list of performers that cross racial lines.
The following weekend, Aug. 12-13, the city will stage a celebration of the 50th anniversary of V-J Day with street dancing and concerts emphasizing the music popular during World War II.
Since its earliest days, Portsmouth people have contributed much to this nation and especially to the World War efforts. They should be proud of their past and there's no time better to celebrate that heritage. by CNB
