CITY'S TEAMS SET FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS EIGHT ENTRIES WILL VIE FOR THE TITLE IN A THREE-NIGHT TOURNAMENT, AUG. 8-11, IN CHESAPEAKE.

Portsmouth's entries have been determined for the 15th annual Tidewater Softball Championships, scheduled for Aug. 8-11.

The three-night tournament features the premier adult teams in Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. One night is set aside for a rain date.

Games will be played at the Greenbrier Park and Indian River High School fields in Chesapeake. Games are scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday with Thursday as the rain day.

Sponsored by the Chesapeake Parks and Recreation Department for the second year, the tournament is free to the public. Concessions also will be available.

The Tidewater Championships will have 32 participating teams. Each of the four area cities will be represented by two teams in the Men's, Women's, Church and Coed Leagues.

The championship finals will be held at the two fields at Greenbrier Park Friday, Aug. 11. The Coed and Church finals will start at 7 p.m., followed by an accuracy hitting contest for women and the men's home run contest. The Women's and Men's team finals are scheduled to begin at 9 p.m.

Portsmouth's entries will be the champions and runners-up in the Men's Class A, Church League, Women's and the Coed League.

Harrison's Moving/Commerce Bank/Mario's will be Portsmouth's No. 1 Men's entry and Merchants/Hoo-Yahs/Barrell will be the second seed from the city. Harrison's will play the Chesapeake runnerup and Merchants will meet the Chesapeake champion.

Alliance Christian, nearly a perennial Portsmouth representative, will be the city's No. 1 entry in the Church division. Second-seeded will be St. Therese I. Alliance will play Chesapeake's No. 2 entry. St. Therese I will meet Norfolk's championship team.

In the Women's division, P.J.'s Elite is seeded No. 1 from Portsmouth, and New Generation is second-seeded. P.J.'s Elite will oppose the No. 2 Virginia Beach team. New Generation will play the Virginia Beach champion.

Harrison's Moving/Commerce Bank/Mario's will be the city's No. 1 entry in the Coed division. D&D Masonry will be the second seed.

Harrison's will play the Norfolk runner-up entry. D&D will meet the Chesapeake champion.

The Tidewater Softball Championships rotate through the four participating cities. Portsmouth will not be the host city again until the year 2000.

Last year, only one Portsmouth team, Harrison's, reached the final - in the Men's division. Harrison's lost to Clancy's in the championship game, 22-16.

The Church title went to Mt. Pleasant Mennonites of Chesapeake, a 12-0 victor over Bethel Baptist. The Coed winner was Superior/Hudgins. Superior/Hudgins posted a 17-5 victory over Bad Company of Norfolk.

In the Women's championship game, Superior Pest Control bested DC Controllers, 9-5.

A Portsmouth player, Allan Knox of Harrison's, won the home-run hitting contest last year. He defeated Mike Southworth of Virginia Beach in a one-pitch, sudden-death playoff after the two tied in regular competition. by CNB
