I. RIVER IS LEAGUE CHAMP BRAVES UNBEATEN IN SUMMER FOOTBALL.

INDIAN RIVER CLOSED out the inaugural season of the Chesapeake Community Passing League with a 16-0 shutout of Deep Creek. With the victory, the Braves finished with a 4-0 record and claimed the championship.

Western Branch, which had the night off, finished second with a 3-1 record.

Indian River scored all of its points in the first half, with quarterback James Boyd hitting his two favorite targets in the summer league - Anthony Cason and Lance Bishop - for touchdowns.

Boyd connected with Cason on the first series with a 45 yard score to put the Braves ahead, 8-0. Boyd then hit Bishop for a 27 yard touchdown. The two-point conversion rounded out the scoring.

``I wasn't real pleased with tonight's performance. The kids were a little lackadaisical,'' said Indian River coach Bob Parker. ``But over all, (the league) went well. . . .''

Oscar Smith 20, Great Bridge 15: Jamar Lewis had two touchdown passes as the Tigers (2-2) defeated Great Bridge to finish with two consecutive victories.

Lewis hit Byron Harvin with a nine yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. The Wildcats (0-4) retaliated when quarterback Mike Cuddyer hooked up with Adrian Hughes on a 30 yard score to cut the lead to 8-7.

Brian Lewis took over as the Oscar Smith quarterback and found Lavon Rice for a 70 yard bomb, but Cuddyer countered with a 29 yard score to Jason Buckley. Great Bridge took the lead, 15-14, on a two-point conversion.

The Tigers marched down the field on their next possession, as Jamar Lewis hit George Sumner late in the game from five yards out for the winning score.

``I feel I have a better handle on our personnel, which will help me plan for the season,'' said Oscar Smith coach Bill Lyons. ``This league gave us the opportunity to learn the offensive and defensive concepts that we're going to use, and the kids are excited.''
