The Virginia Beach Police Department will kick off National Night Out with a parade at Lynnhaven Mall at 7 p.m. today.
Staging for the parade will begin at 6:30 outside Leggett Department Store. There also will be refreshments and displays.
The actual National Night Out will be Tuesday. That's when people are supposed to gather outdoors and turn on their lights to show community spirit against crime.
The observance is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
A number of Virginia Beach neighborhoods will hold their own observances on Tuesday from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
They include: Bow Creek, lemonade stands; Princess Anne Crossing, watermelon social at park; Lake Placid, community walk; Lynnhaven Woods, watermelon social at park; Scarborough Square, picnic at the park; Aragona, cook-out at 640 Spooner Road, balloon party at the corner of Iris Lane and Jacqueline Avenue and neighborhood meetings at 649 Kenneth Road and 649 Aragona Blvd.; Charlestown, party on Lagare Lane.
Also Banbury Lake Village Apartments, luau party at the pool; Brandon/Bent Tree, neighborhood parade at Brandon Junior High at 7 p.m.; Cedar Ridge, block parties; Windsor Oaks, party at the end of Forrester Lane; Indian Lakes Apartments, party at the office; Whitehurst Woods, dessert social at 1041 Goldleaf Court; Sherry Park, neighborhood party; Brigadoon, neighborhood parties; and Riverton Estates/Lakeview, neighborhood party. by CNB
