A comment piece in today's Sunday Break, ``Susan Smith became a

complex Cinderella,'' on Page E7, was written before the sentencing

in the South Carolina murder case and gave incorrect information in

the third paragraph. Smith was sentenced to life in prison.

The top lines of two Sunday Break headlines are missing in

today's paper. The headlines, on Page E3, should say: ``U.Va. law

student helps alter world of guidebooks'' and ``Airlines have

chopped hours off flights from United States to Asia.''

Hurricane Hugo hit South Carolina in 1989. A graphic on

Saturday's front page gave the wrong year. Also, the graphic did not

include one of the deadliest natural disasters in United States

history, the 1900 hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas, claiming

more than 6,000 lives.

The oiler Savannah was decommissioned in ceremonies Friday at the

Norfolk Naval Station. A caption accompanying pictures on Page B3

Saturday gave a wrong location and did not state what type of vessel

the ship is.

The new area code for much of the western part of Virginia, now

served by 703, will be 540. An editorial in Saturday's newspaper

gave the wrong area code.
