Aug. 2, 1990 - Iraqi troops and tanks storm across the border

into Kuwait and quickly seize control of the oil-rich desert

sheikdom. President George Bush attacks Iraq's ``naked

aggression.''

Aug. 6, 1990 - Bush orders U.S. military forces to Saudi Arabia

to defend its oil fields, the greatest American overseas military

buildup since the Vietnam war. The Pentagon calls it ``Operation

Desert Shield.''

Aug. 8, 1990 - Bush tells reporters ``a line has been drawn in

the sand.''

Aug. 17, 1990 - Iraq seizes foreign nationals in Iraq and Kuwait,

including about 3,000 Americans, as ``human shields.''

Aug. 22, 1990 - Oil prices hit a seven-year high. The following

day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummets 14 percent.

Oct. 1, 1990 - Israel begins distributing gas masks to Israeli

public.

Nov. 8, 1990 - Bush orders massive increase in number of U.S.

land, sea and air forces deployed in the Gulf, a move that would

double the force level to 425,000 by early 1991.

Nov. 29, 1990 - U.N. Security Council sets Jan. 15, 1991,

deadline for Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait.

Dec. 6, 1990 - Saddam Hussein orders all Western hostages freed.

Jan. 9, 1991 - Secretary of State James Baker and Iraq's foreign

minister meet in Geneva, but fail to reach agreement to avert war.

Jan. 16, 1991 - An international air force led by the United

States launches air and missile attacks on Iraq and Iraqi-held

Kuwait.

Jan. 22, 1991 - Iraq begins setting oil facilities in Kuwait on

fire.

Feb. 23, 1991 - The United States and its coalition partners

launch a sweeping ground assault to drive Iraq from Kuwait.

Feb. 27, 1991 - Bush announces a cease-fire, declaring, ``Kuwait

is liberated.''

Feb. 28, 1991 - Iraq agrees to cease-fire. Total allied combat

fatalities are put at 141. Estimates of Iraqi troops and civilians

killed range as high as 100,000.
