Meredith Wood Hayes, 89, died on July 29, 1995, after a brief illness.
He was born in Gates County, N.C., the son of Robert Wood and Henrietta Cowper Hayes. He was retired from Virginia Transit Company after 40 years of service. He was a member of Park Place Methodist Church, where he was also a member of the Wesleymen's Bible Class.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ethel Porter Hayes; a son, Robert M. Hayes of Virginia Beach; a granddaughter, Lee Forinash of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, James Reed Hayes and Thomas Matthew Hayes of Virginia Beach; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Shawn and Jessica Lee Forinash, Tori Lynn Hayes and Michael James Hayes; a brother, Garland Hayes; three sisters, Emma Parker, Caroline Perry and Eloise Dickey; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Smith at Park Place Methodist Church on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. The family will be at Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at 3508 Sandy Point Lane, Virginia Beach, following the funeral.
