Scott Cole of Virginia Beach celebrated his 38th birthday Thursday by catching one of the largest flounder landed in Virginia waters in the past decade.
The fish, boated at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on a slow-trolled live bait, weighed 11 pounds, 12 ounces. It will take the lead in the annual Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament.
Elsewhere, cobia continued their strong showing in the lower Chesapeake Bay.
A party with skipper Jim Jenrette on the Buccaneer out of the Cape Charles Fishing Center reported 10 catches Sunday. The largest weighed 46 pounds.
Another group on Kenny Taylor's F-Troop II out of Lynnhaven Waterways Marina in Virginia Beach registered four citation-winning cobia - three releases and a 47-pounder.
Freshwater action was generally slow, with local lakes extremely hot because of the recent weather. Fishing pressure has been light in most freshwater areas. by CNB
