Mr. John Edward Gibbs, 69, of the first block of Oliver St., Hertford, died Monday, July 31, 1995, at his residence.
He was a native of Norfolk and a former resident of Virginia Beach. He was a real estate land developer and a builder. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hertford, N.C., and a member of the Masonic Lodge (NU)196 AF & AM in Kempsville, Va. He was a Merchant Marine.
Mr. Gibbs was the son of the late Elbert and Mildred A. Owens Gibbs and the husband of Ottilie Wendler Gibbs of the home.
Besides his wife, Mr. Gibbs is survived by a daughter and two sons, Caroline Z. Haley, John E. Gibbs Jr. and Daniel D. Gibbs, all of Virginia Beach; brother, Elbert Gibbs of Roanoke; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, August 2, 1995, at 2 p.m. in Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Portsmouth. Burial will follow. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, N.C., today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City is in charge of arrangements.
