Lorene Virginia Vernon Shumate, 87, of the 100 block of Ridgely Point, died July 30, 1995, in Portsmouth.
Mrs. Shumate was born in Spray, N.C., and was the widow of Otis Lee Shumate. She taught art at Carolton Oaks School, YWCA, and the Adult Education Center of the City of Norfolk. She was a member of Talbot Park Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for about 20 years. She was past president of the Federation of Garden Clubs of Norfolk and Vicinity; member of Riverpoint and Home and Garden Clubs; Womens Division of the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce; board member of YWCA; Tidewater Rose Society; Tidewater Arts Society; Chesapeake Arts Society; Arts Trio Arts Society; Colonial Dames of the XVII Century-Suffolk Chapter; Tidewater Regents Club; Jamestown Society; Ligon Family Association; Vernon Family Association; National Society of Magna Carta Dames; Sovereign Society of Americans of Royal Decent; Colonial Order of the Crown; Tidewater Genealogical Society and Norfolk Borough Chapter of D.A.R.
Survivors include daughter, Patricia Pfeiffer of Portsmouth; son, Robert Shumate of Citrus Heights, Calif., brother, William Abdon Vernon Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Matthew Shumate, Laura Shumate and Katherine Shumate, all of Citrus Heights; and Andrew Pfeiffer of Portsmouth.
The funeral will be conducted Friday, August 4, 1995, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Bill Stuart in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
