An eight-year veteran of WWII never received medals while serving on active duty. To whom does he write to have medals and battle stars issued?

Navy veterans must send their separation document (DD-214), a letter requesting the awards, and a return address, complete with signature to: Navy Liaison Office, Room 5409, 9700 Page Ave., St. Louis, MO 63132. If the separation document can't be located, the veteran should send the letter of request and include their full name, date and place of birth, service number, dates and branch of service, return address, and a signature. For a member of the Army or Air Force, the same information is needed. However, information should be sent to the following address: National Personnel Records Center, 9700 Page Ave., St. Louis, MO 63132. These offices will pull the service record, verify the unit(s) assigned, and check the units for awards presented. The request may take a few months due to a backlog.

I was on board a ship during the war called the U.S.S. Cabot CVL-28. Can you give me some information on the ship? And what has happened to the ship?

The light carrier CABOT (CVL 28), named after John Cabot, the Venetian navigator who discovered the North American continent in 1497, has been preserved as a memorial at the CABOT/DEDALO Museum in New Orleans, La.

Is there a locator service in the Navy?

There certainly is. If you need to get in touch with someone in the Navy, write to Navy Personnel Locator, Department of the Navy, Washington, D.C. 20370-5005. Or call (703)614-5011 or 614-3155.

I have a daughter who has been seen by the military oncologist and she had had cancer and she's almost 18. I was wondering how long her medical will be extended for? If it will be past 18 since she's getting ongoing care?

Your daughter's coverage will be extended under Champus until she is 21. If she is attending college, her coverage will be extended until the age of 23.

I'd like to know how to get a historical record of any ship in the Navy, preferably during World War II.

The Kirn Memorial Library in Norfolk might be able to help you. The ``Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships,'' published in 1981, gives a complete history of the battles the ships fought in and whether the ships are still in service. Also, the library has Jane's Fighting Ships, which lists ship dimensions, main machinery, guns and radars. by CNB
