Sallie Dortch Jeter, 98, died July 31, 1995.
She was the widow of William Jeter III. The Jeters resided in Richmond and Boyton, Va. Mrs. Jeter was born and educated in Mecklenburg, Va., and attended Harrisonburg State Teachers College (now known as James Madison University). She retired from the University of Virginia where she served as a housemother to the student nurses in McKim Hall for 17 years. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher and active in the United Methodist Women. She was very active in church work throughout her life, and served on the district level in Mecklenburg County.
She is survived by her only child, a daughter, Geraldine Jeter Gregg, and her husband Otis; a grandson, the Rev. Dr. William Otis Gregg and his wife Kathy; a granddaughter, Nancy Jeter Benbow and her husband John; three grandsons, Patrick Clinton Benbow, Parker Gregg Benbow and Nathan William Gregg; a sister, Miss Marie Dortch; three nieces, Helen Dortch Bugg, Jean Dortch Evans, and Shirley Dortch Szezebak.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Katherine Pigg and the Rev. Dr. William O. Gregg, 11 a.m. Saturday at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Portsmouth. Burial will be private at a later date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church, 300 Broad St., Portsmouth, Va., 23707, or charity of their own choice.
